Amazon is prioritizing sustainable packaging solutions through a multi-year initiative focused on eliminating plastic from its North American fulfillment centers. A key milestone has been reached with the removal of 95% of plastic air pillows from packaging. This initiative is expected to be Amazon's largest plastic packaging reduction effort in North America to date, avoiding nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually.
With extensive collaboration across internal teams and supplier, the transition to paper filler, made from 100% recycled content and curbside recyclable demonstrates the company's commitment to both product protection and environmental responsibility. Rigorous testing, including assessments by third-party engineering labs, confirmed the effectiveness of paper filler as a protective material. The shift towards paper filler as a packaging material is in addition to Amazon's established 'Ships in Product Packaging' program, where qualified items are shipped in their original manufacturer's packaging.

Amazon is continuously innovating and exploring new solutions such as collaborations with the U.S. Department of Energy and AI-powered robotics for recycling sorting, all with the goal of minimizing environmental impact while maintaining exceptional customer service.
