Retailers are already eyeing their back-to-school dollars. With the massive shopping event, Amazon Prime Day, happening July 16th and 17th, stores like Target and Walmart are launching their back-to-school deals much earlier than ever before.
This earlier push is all about capturing a bigger chunk of the back-to-school spending pie. Estimated at $41.5 billion for K-12 students alone (and a whopping $135.5 billion including college students), retailers are eager to get a head start on Amazon and secure a larger portion of shoppers' budgets before Prime Day rolls around. Consumers can expect to see significant discounts across various categories. Target launched a week-long event with 30% off uniforms and backpacks. Walmart is boasting their "largest deals event ever". Even different TikTok Shops are getting in on the action with a deals event running from July 12th to 17th.
Back-to-school shopping can be a hectic time for both retailers and consumers. By starting promotions earlier, stores can potentially spread out the demand and avoid a last-minute rush. This can be helpful for managing inventory levels and ensuring they have enough stock to meet customer needs throughout the season. The pandemic has likely influenced the way consumers shop for back-to-school items. With more online shopping and a focus on early holiday promotions, retailers might be adapting their strategies to cater to this evolving behavior. Starting promotions earlier gives shoppers more time to browse, compare prices, and potentially make multiple purchases throughout the season.
