Post-Algorithm Culture: What Comes After the Era of the Feed?

For much of the past decade, culture has increasingly arrived through a feed. Instagram told us where to travel. TikTok told us what to buy. Spotify told us what to listen to. Netflix told us what to watch. Amazon told us what other people bought next. Algorithms became one of the most powerful cultural gatekeepers of the modern era. They also made discovery extraordinarily efficient. But efficiency has a side effect.

When millions of people are served content through systems optimized around similar measures of engagement, culture can begin to feel remarkably repetitive. The same restaurants. The same interiors. The same beauty products. The same destinations. The same microtrends.

At MADE Trends, we're watching signs of consumers beginning to push against that sameness.

We call it post-algorithm culture.

The algorithm isn't disappearing

Let's be clear. Post-algorithm doesn't mean social media is ending or recommendation engines are going away. Quite the opposite. Algorithms are becoming more deeply embedded into everyday life as artificial intelligence makes recommendation and discovery systems more sophisticated. But consumer behavior around them is changing.

The feed was exciting because it seemed capable of showing us something we hadn't seen before. Consumers increasingly understand that a feed isn't simply reflecting culture back to them. It's deciding what becomes visible in the first place.

That creates a new desire: Show me something I wouldn't normally see.

Search doesn't happen in one place anymore

Consider the way consumers search. In a 2026 Adobe Express survey reported by JCK, 49% of U.S. consumers said they had used TikTok to search for information. Among Gen Z, that figure climbed to 65%. But TikTok isn't simply replacing Google.

When consumers were asked which platforms they found most helpful for searching, Google still dominated at 85%. Yet Reddit reached 29%, ChatGPT 26%, YouTube 24% and TikTok 16%. That's the real story. Search isn't moving from A to B. It's fragmenting.

A restaurant might be discovered through TikTok. A complicated question goes to ChatGPT. A product review goes to Reddit. Inspiration comes from Instagram. A tutorial goes to YouTube. A local recommendation comes from a friend. And Google still connects much of it. Rather than one dominant discovery ecosystem, we're moving toward layers of influence.

Social media has become product research

The distinction between social media, search and shopping is disappearing too. IZEA's 2025 consumer research found that 86% of respondents searched for brands on social media before making purchases. That's an extraordinary shift from the early idea of social media as primarily a communications or entertainment channel. Social has become research infrastructure.

But the more information consumers encounter, the more another problem grows: Who do I trust?

Taste is becoming valuable again

When everyone can access the same information, access itself becomes less valuable. Selection becomes more valuable. In other words: Taste matters.

This helps explain the renewed relevance of curators, editors, independent retailers, specialist creators and people whose recommendations feel highly specific rather than universally optimized.

The question shifts from: What's popular? to: Who do I trust to tell me what's interesting? That's a significant change for marketing.

Mass reach remains powerful. But specificity can create credibility. A recommendation reaching a smaller, highly engaged community can sometimes carry more cultural weight than something passively served to millions.

AI could accelerate post-algorithm culture

Artificial intelligence makes this tension considerably more interesting. Generative AI is making it possible to produce images, articles, recommendations, videos and marketing content at extraordinary scale. Quantity won't be the problem. Knowing what deserves our attention will.

As the supply of content approaches infinity, trusted filtering becomes more valuable. That means the future of influence may not belong only to people and platforms capable of creating the most content. It may belong to those capable of making sense of it. Curation becomes a service. Context becomes a service. Expertise becomes a service. And increasingly: Taste becomes a service.

The return of human discovery

There's an interesting irony here. The more sophisticated digital discovery becomes, the more valuable distinctly human forms of discovery may feel. A recommendation from a friend. A great independent store. A dinner conversation. An editor whose taste you understand. A newsletter you actually open. A brand discovered while traveling. Something seen on the street rather than on a screen. This doesn't mean abandoning digital marketing. It means recognizing that the most interesting cultural signals may increasingly emerge outside the largest feeds before eventually finding their way into them.

What post-algorithm culture means for brands

For marketers, this requires thinking beyond reach. The dominant social strategy of the past decade encouraged brands to pursue visibility: more content, more creators, more impressions, more opportunities to appear in the feed. Those metrics aren't disappearing. But another question becomes more important: Where does our brand have cultural permission to participate?

That requires understanding smaller communities, niche interests, physical spaces and trusted voices rather than attempting to insert a brand into every trending conversation. It may also require rediscovering channels marketers once considered inefficient. Events. Retail. Editorial. Newsletters. Partnerships. Communities. Word of mouth. The irony of increasingly sophisticated digital marketing may be that some of the most powerful forms of influence begin to feel distinctly human again.

What we're watching next

The algorithm created an era of unprecedented cultural acceleration. A niche idea could become a global aesthetic almost overnight. But when everything moves quickly, novelty expires quickly too. We're watching for a countershift toward slower discovery, smaller communities, deeper expertise and more idiosyncratic taste. Culture won't stop moving through algorithms. But algorithms may no longer hold quite the same monopoly over discovery. The next era of influence could be more fragmented, more personal and considerably harder to manufacture. For brands willing to look beyond the feed, that might be a very good thing.
