Sunglasses continue to be a hot commodity, but this summer saw a surge in popularity for luxury brands and strategic collaborations. Independent labels are entering the market, but established names like Saint Laurent and Prada are dominating with celebrity endorsements and limited-edition drops.
Collaborations proved to be a powerful tool for generating hype. Saint Laurent's limited-edition Wayfarer collab with Ray-Ban, modeled by Hailey Bieber, became an instant sell-out. Prada, meanwhile, saw a massive boost on TikTok with user-generated content and campaigns featuring stars like Pete Davidson and Jake Gyllenhaal. Analysts point to the growing importance of sunglasses for luxury brands, particularly for attracting younger consumers who might not be able to afford pricier items.
Luxury isn't the only space seeing a collaboration boom. Gentle Monster's partnerships with Mugler and Maison Margiela, as well as their recent campaign featuring Blackpink's Jennie Kim, created a buzz online and in stores. London concept store Goodhood has also found success with exclusive collaborations, demonstrating that even smaller brands can leverage this strategy.
Beyond collaborations, major events and social media trends have also influenced sunglass popularity. The summer Olympics served as another unexpected platform for sunglasses trends. Wrap-around styles, traditionally seen as practical rather than fashionable, gained traction thanks to their visibility on popular athletes. This highlights the growing influence of sports culture on fashion, with brands like Oakley experiencing significant growth in demand. Social media trends also play a part. The "Brat summer" aesthetic popularized by Charli XCX, featuring bold shapes from Balenciaga, has driven sales of similar styles. This highlights the growing influence of online trends on the eyewear market.
With their year-round appeal and ability to elevate any outfit, sunglasses are poised to remain a major growth category for the foreseeable future.
