Balenciaga staged a remarkable comeback with its Fall 2024 show in Los Angeles, marking a year since a controversial holiday ad campaign that sent sales plummeting. The brand, amidst celebrity forgiveness, unveiled its collection in Hancock Park, drawing stars like Nicole Kidman and Kim Kardashian to the front row.
Reflecting the artistic vision of designer Demna Gvasalia, the fashion show transported attendees into a world inspired by his fond childhood memories of California, allowing them to experience a captivating blend of nostalgia and innovation.

The tone of his show aimed for a cinematic experience, delving into the cultural landscape of Los Angeles with social rather than more politically driven commentary. With his take on the gym and wellness cuIture with Y2k references to Juicy couture, velour sweats and Ugg-like boots paired with Erewhon references showcased a whirlwind of styles, from gym wear to grunge, bouclé suits to red carpet extremes, presenting exaggerated fashion statements like oversized trouser suits and striking satin gowns.
Models were seen with oversized Balenciaga coffee cups, cellphones, and quirky accessories like paper bags mimicking Erewhon grocery bags, reflecting Demna's trademark social media allure. The collection played with California stereotypes, merging irony and homage, signaling a departure from previous penitent showcases.

Demna expressed a desire to celebrate the city he admired while growing up, crafting a fashion narrative rooted in native dress that shaped his aesthetic. The show, a fusion of nostalgic references and extravagant statements, aimed to captivate with its boldness and departure from conventional runway exhibitions.
Balenciaga’s return to the spotlight in L.A. signaled a shift back to extravagant displays, marking a departure from earlier subdued presentations. Demna's collection was a colorful, exaggerated portrayal of California's essence, an artistic resurrection echoing the sentiment: "I'm back!"
