This summer, Chatsworth, a magnificent estate owned by the Devonshires, plays host to the exhibition "Erdem: Imaginary Conversations." The exhibit explores the influence of the late Deborah Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, on designer Erdem Moralioglu's latest collection. The Duchess, affectionately known as Debo, spent decades managing Chatsworth and became a beloved public figure. The exhibition celebrates her ingenuity and spirit, showcasing Erdem's designs inspired by her life.

However, the fashion world's fascination with aristocracy faces criticism. While there is acknowledgment in the beauty of the Chatsworth exhibition itself, a deeper meaning emerges. Fashion designers are drawn to the grandeur and eccentricity of the aristocracy, using them as inspiration for collections that romanticize a bygone era. This fascination stems from a perceived blend of luxury and practicality, a world where decay is seen as unconventional and quality is timeless.

The 'regency era' aesthetic, embracing grace and refinement, has garnered the attention of many as period romance dramas like Bridgerton capture the fantasy of high society. This idea of romanticism often overlooks the aristocracy's history of exploitation and inherited wealth. Because many designers and models come from wealthy backgrounds, significant barriers to entry are created for working-class individuals, reinforcing the image of fashion as an exclusive club. Despite their diminished power, the aristocracy remains a source of fascination and wealth. Their grand estates attract tourists, and their past continues to inspire fashion trends.
