Consumer spending remains strong, but with a growing preference for non-essential items. While wages are still outpacing inflation, consumers are becoming more price-conscious and shifting their spending from big-ticket home goods to apparel, sporting equipment, and other non-essential items. This trend marks a shift from 2021's surge in home improvement purchases due to pandemic restrictions. To stretch their dollars further, some shoppers are even starting their holiday shopping earlier this year, strategically seeking deals.
This shift in spending habits is further supported by the continued strong growth in cargo container traffic at major U.S. and Canadian ports. Cargo container traffic surged 17.4% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year. This growth is expected to remain steady at around 10% for the year, even amidst an economic slowdown. Cargo container traffic is a key indicator of consumer spending because it reflects the movement of goods from manufacturers to retailers. A surge in cargo traffic suggests that consumers are still spending, even if they're shifting their focus.
