British pop artist Charli XCX has ignited a new cultural phenomenon dubbed "brat summer" with the release of her latest album. As her album cover boasted a lime green background with the word "brat" taking center stage, her fans have coined the word to describe her fan base, resulting in 1M posts on TikTok referencing #bratsummer. A new report by Launchmetrics, a company that tracks the online influence of brands and individuals, estimates that Brat has generated $22.5 million in media impact value (MIV). Unlike past summer trends focused on aesthetics or activities like "hot girl summer" or mob wives aesthetic, "brat summer" champions a specific attitude.
This movement champions confidence, self-expression, and a carefree spirit. Charli XCX embodies this philosophy perfectly, blurring the lines between luxury and rebellion with designer clothes juxtaposed by cigarettes and a casual top. The "Brat" aesthetic thrives on authenticity, rejecting manufactured perfection in favor of a genuine self-image. This resonates particularly with Millennials and Gen Z, who are reclaiming the word "brat" from its negative connotations. They now wear it as a badge of honor, signifying their independence, individuality, and willingness to challenge societal expectations.
Pinterest searches for "lime green outfits" has soared by 460%. As luxury brands like Bottega Veneta and Gucci have signature colors, Charli XCX has taken ownership of the "slime green" that is predicted to be featured heavily on the fall catwalks. According to Launchmetrics, Charli XCX has driven $788,000 in MIV for Marni, $382,000 for Balenciaga, $257,000 for Givenchy, $257,000 for Saint Laurent and $116,000 for Y/Project from her audience interaction.

Other brands are taking advantage of the trend. Kate Spade, popular for handbags, used #bratsummer on TikTok by posting a 'Brat green starter pack' with products in the green shade. Makeup brand ColourPop used Brat song '360' referencing how to be Julia Fox with these 'lime green faves'.
While Charli XCX's reach is less than megastars like Beyonce, her impact has become the 'attitude' of summer versus an aesthetic. Beyonce, whose album 'Cowboy Carter' inspired the 'Cowboy Carter era' of western-style product, is likened to the Brat movement. Barbiecore, eternalized with Margot Robbie's method dressing, had a more clever approach to branding, while Charlie XCX's team has used a 'guerrilla' approach. Recently, a wall painted Brat green in New York's Greenpoint neighborhood termed "Brat Wall", has been featured in 5.7 million posts on TikTok. Expect to see more consumers embracing "brat girl summer".
