As the holiday season approaches, Gen Z, a generation often associated with impulsive spending and trend-driven purchases, is taking a more pragmatic approach to gift-giving and wishlisting. While younger members of the generation may still be leaning towards traditional gifts like fashion and beauty, older Gen Zers, particularly those entering the workforce, are prioritizing practicality and experiences over material possessions.
Fashion and beauty remain top categories on Gen Z's holiday wishlists, however, economic pressures have led many to ask for things they need anyway like socks, lipsticks, lip glosses, makeup palettes and body wash, which are all trending on TikTok.
While some Gen Zers are prioritizing practical gifts, others are embracing luxury and self-care, with 45% of Gen Zs planning to treat themselves this holiday season. High-end fragrances and beauty products are gaining popularity, as are experiences like concerts, travel, and dining out. This shift towards experiential gifts reflects a desire to create lasting memories and prioritize personal well-being.
Social media platforms like TikTok and Pinterest have emerged as powerful tools for holiday shopping inspiration. TikTok, in particular, has transformed into a hub for product discovery and viral trends.
Nostalgia plays a significant role in Gen Z's holiday shopping behavior. Brands that evoke feelings of comfort and sentimentality are more likely to resonate with this generation. This year, there has been a resurgence of classic fragrances and retro fashion trends, as Gen Z seeks to connect with the past.
As the holiday season unfolds, it's clear that Gen Z is redefining the rules of gift-giving. By understanding their evolving preferences and leveraging the power of social media, brands can effectively connect with this influential demographic and drive sales.
