Despite entering the workforce during a period of economic recovery, Gen Z appears to be facing steeper financial challenges than Millennials did at the same age. This disparity is driven by a confluence of factors, including rising costs of living, increased debt burdens, and the lingering effects of the global pandemic.
Gen Z allocates a significantly larger portion of their income towards essential expenses like housing and insurance compared to millennials at a similar stage in life. This trend holds true even after adjusting for inflation, paying 31 percent more than a decade ago, highlighting the substantial increase in the cost of living. While Gen Z workers may command higher wages on average, rising living expenses often leave them with less disposable income. This financial strain, coupled with easier access to credit, has led to a higher overall debt burden for Gen Z, encompassing credit cards, student loans, and other forms of borrowing.

Several factors contribute to Gen Z's distinct financial struggles. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their formative years, limiting job opportunities and curtailing valuable social experiences. Additionally, relaxed regulations on credit card issuance in recent years has potentially contributed to a culture of debt accumulation among young adults. However, the most significant challenge appears to be the current surge in inflation, which has outpaced wage growth. This inflationary environment makes everyday necessities like housing, food, and transportation considerably more expensive for Gen Z.
The financial difficulties faced by Gen Z could have long-term ramifications. Their ability to achieve financial security, build wealth, and pursue major life goals such as homeownership may be largely hampered. To navigate these challenges, financial experts recommend that Gen Z prioritize strategies like aggressively paying down high-interest debt, building an emergency savings fund, and meticulously planning for future goals, taking into account the rising cost of living.
While Gen Z faces a more challenging financial landscape compared to millennials, their characteristic resilience and adaptability offer a glimmer of hope. By adopting strategic financial management practices and prioritizing long-term goals, Gen Z can overcome these obstacles and achieve financial security in the years to come.
