Walmart, the retail giant known for its everyday low prices, is making a strategic move to attract a new customer segment: luxury shoppers. Starting this Thursday, Walmart will offer a curated selection of pre-owned handbags, watches, and fine jewelry from coveted brands like Hermès, Goyard, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Dior through a partnership with Rebag, a leading online resale platform.
This move comes on the heels of the recent "Wirkin" phenomenon, where a $78 handbag sold by third-party merchants on Walmart's platform, bearing a striking resemblance to the iconic Hermès Birkin bag, quickly went viral on TikTok. While the listings were subsequently removed, the incident highlighted a growing demand for luxury-inspired goods at accessible price points.
Walmart's partnership with Rebag isn't their first foray into resale. In September 2024, they launched a dedicated resale section on their marketplace called "Resold at Walmart." This platform allows brands and third-party sellers to list a wide variety of pre-owned or restored items, ranging from Swiss watches to laptops. Additionally, in September 2024, Walmart announced a similar partnership with sneaker resale company StockX. Through this collaboration, sneakers sold by StockX became available for purchase on Walmart.com. These initiatives demonstrate Walmart's broader commitment to expanding its resale offerings beyond just luxury goods.

Walmart's push into luxury resale aligns with several key consumer trends. There's a growing interest in pre-owned luxury goods, driven by affordability and sustainability concerns. Michael Mosser, Vice President of Marketplace at Walmart US, highlights these factors: "One of the things we love about pre-owned luxury is the accessibility of the price point for these coveted brands and also its alignment with Walmart's initiatives around sustainability."
This partnership benefits both parties. Walmart gains access to a new customer base – affluent shoppers and fashion enthusiasts seeking pre-owned luxury goods. Rebag expands its reach to millions of potential customers, including those in suburban and rural areas who may not be familiar with online resale options. Rebag CEO Charles Gorra states, "The Walmart partnership should enable some of that [geographic] penetration."
Walmart's push into luxury resale is part of a broader strategy to transform its fashion offerings. This includes revamping in-store fashion departments, modernizing private labels, and collaborating with established designers like Brandon Maxwell. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon emphasizes this shift: "We had a lower market share in a lot of fashion categories... But in an omni world, we have an opportunity to increase the amount of market share we have in some of those categories."
The pre-owned luxury market is expected to continue growing, and Walmart is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend. The partnership with Rebag is a strategic move that enhances their online fashion presence and attracts a new generation of shoppers seeking luxury on a budget.
Walmart unveiled a new logo Monday, part of a brand refresh aimed at reflecting its evolution as a modern retailer. While the company emphasized a "people-led, tech-powered" approach, the subtle logo changes, inspired by founder Sam Walton's trucker hat, have drawn online criticism for being barely noticeable. The refreshed branding will gradually roll out across all channels starting this month.
