This weekend, creators and influencers experienced a whirlwind of emotions as the long-anticipated TikTok ban in the United States finally materialized. Just before midnight on Saturday, after numerous legal challenges and rumors of a potential buyout, users attempting to access the app were met with a notification stating that it was no longer available.
However, the initial ban notice included a statement indicating a potential path forward, suggesting a willingness of President-elect Trump to "work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office." This alluded to Trump's statement to NBC News that he planned to give TikTok a 90-day extension to be sold, a stark contrast to his previous efforts to ban TikTok during his first term.
On Sunday morning, President-elect Trump posted "Save TikTok" on his social media platform, and within hours, TikTok announced it was restoring service to US users. This temporary reprieve, however, offered little long-term certainty. The future of TikTok in the United States remains uncertain, leaving millions of creators and influencers, many of whom had come to rely heavily on the platform for their livelihoods and who may not have fully anticipated the ban's immediate implementation, facing an uncertain future.
Since taking off during the pandemic in 2020 TikTok quickly became a primary source of income for many creators, offering monetization avenues like the TikTok Creativity Program and the burgeoning TikTok Shop. For brands, the platform's powerful algorithm provided unprecedented access to new audiences, fueling viral trends and driving product demand.
The weekend's events starkly underscored the fragility of this ecosystem. Even with the temporary reinstatement of the ban, many creators are diversifying their strategies, exploring alternatives like Instagram, YouTube, and the emerging Chinese platform RedNote.
"Creators are turning into small businesses, and they’re having to learn a lot of the lessons that businesses do about diversifying your distribution channels and really owning your customer relationship," observed Scott Sutton, founder of Later, an influencer marketing firm.
The ban has served as a crucial wake-up call for creators. Diversifying revenue streams and building strong presences on other platforms are now paramount.
While the immediate impact on brands may be less severe, the situation necessitates a shift in strategy.
The future of TikTok in the US remains uncertain. However, one thing is clear: this episode has forced a much-needed reevaluation of the social media landscape. Creators are adapting, diversifying, and building more resilient businesses. Brands are recognizing the importance of supporting their creator partners and exploring new avenues for engagement.
