Gen Alpha, born between 2010 and 2023, represents a substantial emerging consumer market for the beauty industry. The behavior of this demographic, often referred to as "Sephora Kids," has drawn significant attention within retail spaces. Social media platforms, particularly TikTok, have highlighted instances of disruptive behavior by large groups of Gen Alpha consumers, impacting the in-store shopping experience for other customers. The availability of product testers at retailers like Ulta and Sephora has contributed to product misuse and display damage by the Gen Alpha age group. Consequently, discussions within Sephora's Beauty Insider community have centered on potential age restrictions for in-store shopping. While many customers express frustration with the behavior of younger consumers, there is also recognition of the importance of parental guidance in product selection.

The widespread influence of social media, especially among Gen Z and Gen Alpha, has led to a surge in beauty product interest in brands like Sol de Janiero, Glow Recipe and Drunk Elephant. Some young consumers are drawn to purchase beauty products repeatedly due to their appealing packaging, viewing them as collectibles or as having 'social status'. However, a lack of ingredient knowledge among younger consumers has raised concerns about potential skin issues. The use of products containing anti-aging ingredients, such as retinol, by individuals with immature skin has resulted in increased allergic reactions, according to dermatologists like Dr. Penzi of Missouri.
In response to these challenges, beauty retailers are implementing strategies to educate younger consumers. Ulta Beauty has introduced age-specific product recommendations for back-to-school shoppers, emphasizing skin safety within its "Back to School" campaign targeting both junior high and elementary school students. Brands like Bubble, launched in 2020, are self-proclaiming as "new school skincare" and 2023 skincare line, Gryt, retails skincare for tween and teens. E.L.F. Beauty remains an affordable option for those new to skincare and beauty products. Gen Alpha's growing purchasing power and social media dominance make them a critical demographic for beauty brands to understand and engage with.
