Designer fragrances are experiencing a surge in popularity among younger customers mirroring a similar trend in the broader beauty industry. This trend appears to be driven, at least in part, by the rise of social media influencers like Jeremy Fragrance on TikTok. Traditionally, high-end fragrances have been marketed towards adults. Now, however, these products are becoming a status symbol for a younger generation bombarded with online content like "smellmaxxing" tutorials. These TikTok videos offer playful advice on everything from selecting the perfect cologne for a date night to choosing an invigorating scent for math tests.

The reach of these influencers is substantial. Jatin Arora, an 18-year-old with over a million TikTok followers, receives complimentary colognes from brands in exchange for promotion, blurring the lines between entertainment and advertising.
While parents may be surprised by their sons' newfound interest in fragrances that can cost hundreds of dollars, the boys themselves view these products as a way to project an image of maturity and confidence. The trend has even permeated middle schools, with students bringing designer colognes to class and showcasing them on social media through "scent of the day" videos.
The fragrance industry is capitalizing on this shift. Retailers like Sephora and Ulta are reporting a significant increase in young customers browsing their cologne sections. Recognizing this new market, designers are revamping their packaging to be more visually appealing to this younger demographic. It has created an opportunity for early brand engagement to hopefully retain them as a loyal customers into their 20s.
While some parents express concerns about the appropriateness of these luxury products for such a young audience, the boys themselves are primarily motivated by a desire to smell good and make a positive impression. Social media, for better or worse, is their primary guide in this new olfactory exploration.
